Finalizing Details

The devil is in the details or so they say. I've had the opportunity to really take a look at some of the pictures I've shot in the Wings of Angels Project while gathering pictures for the blog and it's created a sense of discipline for me to see things with new eyes. I am still finalizing pictures for the Wings of Angels Book to make sure that the ones that you see when the book is published will be something that I am truly pleased with. I've been given me one last opportunity to look over everything to ensure that I am satisfied with what will be coming out.

The most incredible thing about the Wings of Angels Project has been the stories that have been uncovered in the process. From talking to some actual WWII veterans and hearing what really went on during the war, to those current military personnel that are returning home for the war. Then there are the survivor stories, the stories of families that are part of the current war effort I discover during the photo shoots. I found out its not just about taking pictures of beautiful models and fantastic WWII aircraft. It's learning from the models themselves that their grandparents or family had served in the war, much like my own grandfather. It's being able to capture those stories in the photos I took to be able to give back a sense of that servitude and honor of our military heroes and their family.

It has also taken the models into a different sense of history as well to see these war birds up close and personal. The stories that they are even getting from emails from military personnel or interactions with people they meet has engaged them in a profound and life changing way. They have shared those in previous model spotlight posts on my blog. It really has taken this project to a whole new level and I hope that this project conveys the honor and respect that is due to every single person who has served both in the war or as a family supporting the cause.

An In-depth Look at the Whistling Death ~ F4U-4 Corsair

Today's Tribute to Planes takes us to the F4U-4 Corsair that Ashten Goodenough modeled with in the Wings of Angels Project. Owned at the time by Doug Matthews, this is truly a one of a kind legend. Designed with speed in mind that plane was designed by Chance Vought with it's oversized propeller and distinctive bent gull-wing design. Oddly the size of the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine required to use of a larger propeller to fit into the small frame of this plane, it proposed a problem in utilizing it aboard the Naval Aircraft carriers for which it was ordered. The dilemma was either to increase the length of the landing gear or shorten the propeller, but neither were a viable option. To lengthen the landing gear would weaken it when the plane landed on the hard deck of the aircraft carrier. To shorten the propeller would be a waste of the power of the engine.

To get around this problem, the designers came up with a novel solution – the bent ‘gull wing’ design.  This meant that the landing gear could be mounted on the lower tip of the wing bend giving it enough strength for a deck landing whilst having enough clearance for the long prop.  It was later discovered that this design also improved the aerodynamics of the plane, boosting the top speed. In order to increase the aerodynamics of the plane even further, the newly introduced technique of "spot welding" insured greater airstream flow without the protrusion of the rivets.

Yet despite all this design changes when it came to utilizing the Corsair on board the aircraft carrier there were problems they couldn't fix. One of them being the long nose of plane protruding up to 4 meters in the air posed problems for the pilot. When the plane was sitting waiting for take off with the nose pointed in the air, the pilot couldn't see anything. When they attempted to land, the pilot couldn't see the Landing Signals Officer. To make matters worse oil and fluid leaks in the engine compartment by streaking across the windshield further impairing visibility.

Until these issues were resolved the Corsair was deemed unsuitable despite being built for use on aircraft carriers and was used in land based operations for the US Marines. It was here that the Corsair truly shined gaining an impressive kill ration of 11:1, 11 kills for every one Corsair lost. The Corsairs were also sent to Britain, France, New Zealand and Australia for use during World War II.

Indeed, it was the British who managed to find a way to use the plane on their carriers, by altering the final approach landing pattern to a slow continuous curve, only aligning with the deck to touch down at the last second.  This meant the pilot could keep the Signals Officer in view up until the last moment.   They also managed to fix the problem with the fluid leakage by fixing the panels shut with wire.  This diverted the fluid streams onto the fuselage rather than the cockpit. After the carrier landing issues had been tackled it quickly became the most capable carrier-based fighter-bomber of World War II.

For the US Marines and the other nations using the Corsair, the plane performed exceptionally well.  The Marines put the plane to good use in the Pacific Theatre against the Japanese, using islands as mobile bases to launch the planes from. The Japanese considered the plane to be a serious threat and speculation continues as to whether they, the Japanese, nicknamed it ‘Whistling Death’ due to the distinctive high-pitched sound made by wind through the engine vents.

A large number of Corsairs have survived to the present day, many in the hands of private collectors.  They are a common sight at air shows in America and across the world. During the flybys you can hear the distinctive sound that resulted in the plane being nicknamed ‘Whistling Death’!It was a true privilege to be able to photograph the F4U-4 Corsair and to be able to utilize it in the Wings of Angels Project.

Corsair losses in World War II were as follows:-
  • By aerial combat: 189
  • By enemy ground and ship-board anti-aircraft fire: 349
  • Operational losses during combat missions: 230
  • Operational losses during non-combat flights: 692
  • Destroyed aboard ships or on the ground: 164

Model Spotlight ~ Ashten Goodenough

Today's Wings of Angels Model Spotlight shines its light on Ashten Goodenough, and yes, contrary to what you may believe, that is her real last name as she confirmed in our interview today. It is German in origin. Ashten was born on October 18th in Boise, Idaho and for the last six years has been living in San Diego working on her education. In fact, she just obtained her Masters in Fashion and Graphic Design this October. She plans on spending time with her dad and her friends celebrating Christmas in true California style hanging out at the beach and dining out. Oh and her favorite color is blue!

1. Are you a full-time model? And if not, what else do you do?

No, believe it or not I am modeling part time for now as I just finished getting my Masters degree this last October in Fashion and Graphic Design. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to go back to school or take up modeling more now that I have time. Still deciding.

2. What did your parents think of you being a model and were they supportive of you?

My dad was definitely the more supportive of my parents and really saw a future in that for me, while my mom was more hesitant. She was very protective and wanted me to go into the medical field. I had to learn to sift through the shady photographers out there and I think I have a really good head on my shoulders.

3. How did you feel in your first photo shoot?

Oh, I was so nervous! My first shoot was with Paige Craig in Los Angeles doing a lifestyle shoot. She made it simple in doing it on location in this beautiful park with an amazing wardrobe. It was a fun, active shoot and it was a great experience for my first photo shoot. She wanted to bring out my personality, and wanted me to simply be myself and smile and laugh. Then of course, she did what she does best and took some amazing pictures in the process.

4. If a young girl or boy wanted to be a model, what would your advice be for them?

Definitely research poses and facial expressions online and practice a lot in front of the mirror. Then find yourself an agency. Agencies can take you far in the modeling process and also keep you safe. Those two things are the best advice I can give.

5. What has it meant to you to be part of the Wings of Angels Project?

LOVED it!! It was such an honor to be picked by Michael. The funny thing is that it has been over a year since doing my photo shoot and I've met some great people in the whole process. I've met  some amazing people and we talk about the planes used in the WWII while working on fashion. It's been a trade off learning from people in the industry that combines history and fashion together and after all this time it's still benefiting me.

6. What is your favorite photo that Michael has taken of you?

It would be the one in front of the Corsair's left wing by the bombs with my left hand on my hip, saluting with one leg up. I'm wearing an Navy hat in my Secrets in Lace lingerie. I love everything about that picture. It shows everything of me and everything about the plane.

7. What is your best memory of working with Michael?

Honestly, it would have to be all the time in between shots, just us laughing. We just clicked. He is so comforting to work with. We had a photo shot with 60 mph winds and he just created some incredible pictures despite having a difficult time to work in the wind with the hair in my face and being cold outside, and us just laughing about it. He is so good at capturing those incredible pictures. Even now our friendship remains close and we stay in constant contact.

8. How has being a part of the Wings of Angels project changed your perspective of the 1940's and WWII?

Oh I have a lot more respect and honor for pilots and the people who fought for our country. The planes, the uniforms, simply just being around all that, and I know I might sound a little corny, but it makes me truly proud to be an American!

I want to thank Ashten Goodenough for taking time out of her day to answer your questions and perhaps give you more insight into who she is as a Wings of Angels model. I leave you with a behind the scenes video of Ashten Goodenough!

Friday Fun Facts ~ How Monopoly Helped POWs Escape!

We have all played the board game Monopoly at some point in our lives but who would have ever thought the it would have helped in the escape of thousands of Allied Prisoners of War from German camps?

Today's Fun Fact from World War II show cases just how Monopoly played a key role in helping the Allied POW's escape the German Camps.

Germany allowed the Red Cross to send care packages to POW's and among the items that could be sent were board games. Special Monopoly boxes were created that contained items that helped the prisoners escape.

  • German, French and Italian money currency was hidden within the Monopoly money.
  • A metal file was hidden within the board.
  • A small compass was hidden in a play piece.
  • Silk maps of the prison and it's location were hidden inside the hotel pieces.

Just another interesting but fun fact you may have not known about Monopoly and World War II. Now you can share with family and friends just how important a board game was to helping in the war effort for Allied POWs.

End of a Legend - F6F-5 Hellcat

Today's tribute to World War II Aircraft goes to the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat which was the plane used in the Wings of Angels Photographs featuring model Victoria Elder. It is currently on display at Yanks Air Museum in Chino, CA. The United States Navy preferred the F6F-5 Hellcat over the F4U Corsair due to the preference of carrier landings despite the speed difference of the Corsair. This was a critical component for success for the Navy and thus the Corsair was used primarily for land based sorties. The Corsair was eventually cleared for carrier landings but not until late in 1944. The Wildcat was the forerunner to the Hellcat. It truly earned its name with an average kill ratio of 19:1 against the enemy attacks.

The U.S. Navy loved that the Hellcat was easy to maintain and able to withstand considerable damage in addition to it's superiority in being utilized for the aircraft carrier sorties. They were designed with the task of getting the pilot back to base and take damage if needed. Designed with a bullet-resistant windshield, add in 212 pounds of cockpit armor as well as an armor fitted oil tank and oil cooler and you have the makings of a tank with wings in retrospect. Combined with armament of six .50 inch M2/AN Browning machine guns with 400 rounds per gun along with a center-section under the fuselage could carry a single 150 gal (568 l) disposable drop tank. Later planes were equipped with single bomb racks underneath each wing. Further revisions would include the use of night radar and cameras for reconnaissance duties.

The Hellcats despite their air superiority in being faster, did in fact have some disadvantages when utilized against the Japanese Zero Type 52 planes. The F6F outclimbed the Zero marginally above 14,000 ft and rolled faster at speeds above 235 mph. The Japanese fighter could out-turn its American opponent with ease at low speed and enjoyed a slightly better rate of climb below 14,000 ft. When it came to engaging the enemy it came down to one simple strategy:

“Do not dogfight with a Zero 52. Do not try to follow a loop or half-roll with a pull-through. When attacking, use your superior power and high speed performance to engage at the most favorable moment. To evade a Zero 52 on your tail, roll and dive away into a high speed turn." (Spick, Mike. Fighter Pilot Tactics . The Techniques of Daylight Air Combat. Cambridge, UK: Patrick Stephens, 1983.)

What makes the F6F-5 Hellcat that I utilized in the Wings of Angels Photographs is that this is one of the few planes that still retain the original "cat mouth" paint scheme that earmarked this plane for use aboard the USS Princeton. When the Princeton was attacked and sunk, the painted Hellcats were requested to comply with current Naval regulations in which Hellcats were supposed be painted in accordance to the aircraft carrier to which it was assigned. The Navy frown on the "cat mouth" design since this was something done strictly for Hellcats stationed aboard the USS Princeton, and thus this one is truly a one of a kind aircraft and the end of a WWII legend.

Center Stage with Secrets in Lace - Wings of Angels Sponsor

Often times I am asked where people can get some of the items I use in my Wings of Angels photographs and with vintage lingerie that is definitely no exception. Today I am giving you an opportunity to learn more about Secrets in Lace, the lingerie sponsor for the Wings of Angels project and who supplied all the vintage lingerie you see the models wearing.

Secrets in Lace was also the lingerie company I collaborated with to create the Wings of Angels 2012 and 2013 Calendar with proceeds of those calendar sales of $10,000 being given to the Wounded Warriors Fund. It was truly an honor to know that through the purchase of every calendar sold, part of that sale was going to help wounded veterans and their families. The calendar showcased not only the Wings of Angels models alongside some amazing World War II aircraft but also featured the Secrets in Lace lingerie all beautifully photographed by Michael Malak of Malak Photography. It was truly an honor to work together with Secrets in Lace in this charitable joint venture.

One of the key components in any of my WWII Wings of Angels photography was to ensure that all the clothing, shoes, props and lingerie were true period pieces and thus working with Secrets in Lace assured us that quality of lingerie would not be compromised in the photographs.

President and and Co-founder of Secrets in Lace Mr. Daniel J. Whitsett believes "that at Secrets In Lace we believe in the fashion classics, but we also try to maintain values and support causes that stand the test of time.” Secrets In Lace is the preeminent provider of authentic nylon stockings and vintage lingerie. The company began with one store in Northern Virginia in 1984 and has grown into a worldwide mail order business. They recently launched a new site for European customers to go along with their popular US website. Secrets in Lace lingerie is worn by famous and influential people worldwide, including Dita Von Teese. In addition to the Secrets In Lace Brand, they also exclusively design and sell the Dita Von Teese Stocking Collection and the Bettie Page Lingerie Collection.

You can find out more about Secrets in Lace Lingerie by visiting their website or by clicking on their banner on my right hand side bar. You can also find Secrets in Lace on Facebook as well.

Wings of Angels Model Spotlight ~ Victoria Elder

Had an amazing conversation with Victoria Elder as she is getting ready to spend a wonderful Christmas with her family in Texas in preparation for the Wings of Angels Model Spotlight. She was born in the heart of Texas and has lived there her whole life until moving to Los Angeles three years ago. Hard to believe that living in the heart of Texas, she doesn't eat meat, which her family thinks is just weird. She is a huge football fan in both college and professional football. Born January 2nd, Victoria shares one of her favorite Christmas traditions was collecting Christmas ornaments with her sister until they were 18, so being able to look back at all those ornaments gives her time to reflect on all the changes in her life that have happened over the years.

1. Who have been your role models and what about them do you admire?

That is easy, it would be my dad. Even though he passed away during my senior year in High School, his kindness in everything he did and to everyone was unforgettable. He never missed one of my volleyball games and was known as the "water boy" for always bringing a chest of water to the games. He was so well loved that they cancelled school so that students could attend his funeral. That shows what a huge impact he had in people's lives and not just mine.

My 9th grade English teacher as well. He inspired me to be a better writer and was constantly pushing me to never settle for anything in my life. He never let you get comfortable with what you thought was your best. And yes, I did get those assignments turned back in to me with red pen, but he was always creative in his comments so I never saw that as a bad thing. I continue to use that inspiration in everything in my life today!

2. How has modeling been important to you in the Wings of Angels Project?

We had a great opportunity to do a signing at an air show and it just being around the planes played a pivotal part of my life. They (the planes) are truly an emotional piece and just being around them, you can't help but be affected by the stories they could tell if they could talk. Just to know the role these planes played in history is so incredible and emotional.

3. What in your life has brought or given you the greatest satisfaction or fulfillment?

Spending my senior year of high school going to Nicaragua and helping in the orphanages there, teaching these amazing kids about drama and just seeing the profound difference of what I was doing in their lives. It's like my English teacher taught me to never be satisfied and to do greater things with your life. This one experience, even now looking back, is one that is truly unforgettable and one I am glad I took part in.

4. Looking back at your modeling or acting career, is there anything you wish you would have done differently?

Hmm, not necessarily different I would say, I just wish I would have done things earlier. Looking back I could see where if I would have pushed myself to do things earlier instead of simply waiting on different areas could have benefited me sooner.

5. If you could have been born into any period of time in history, which one would you pick and why?

Oh that's easy. Mid 40's to early 50's. I LOVE the clothes. Truly a classic fit. The clothes looked sexy but done in a classy way, not a trashy one. It was like the white picket fence time and things were just much different than they are now. More classic!

6. What is your favorite picture that Michael has taken of you?

It would be the picture Mike took of me in front of the plane saluting. I love the Navy, the formal uniforms, and just that classy look. By far my favorite branch of the service.

7. What is one thing most people don't know about you?

That I'm obsessed with Celine Dion. Everyone thinks that is so weird, but I love her. My life is pretty much an open book and most people know everything about me. I hate drinking out of a can or even watching people do that truly grosses me out. That and buffets. Ever since watching a show on the Discovery Channel about bacteria, I can't eat at one.

8. What is it like working with Michael on the Wings of Angels Project?

I LOVE HIM!!! He is my favorite photographer I have ever worked with. He gives you good direction and does it in a way that is clear so you can really understand. I love the shot in my video where he was telling me about the "A" "E" "I" "O" and "U." He has great wisdom and when he talks to you, he does it in a humble way. I've worked with people who give no direction or yell at you, but working with Mike, is he is easy to be around. He is always great at keeping me in the know and staying in touch. I've worked with people in the past and once things are done, I don't hear anything from them.

Well that wraps up our interview with Victoria Elder, Wings of Angels Model in this week's Model Spotlight. Thanks to Victoria for taking time out of her day to answer these questions and to let you know just a little bit more about who she is. I'll leave you with a look at the Behind the Scenes Photo Shoot video of Victoria Elder's.
